Ruth earned her bachelor's degree from Hampshire College studying animal behavior, specifically focused on primates. She conducted her senior thesis field research in southern Madagascar at the Reserve Speciale de Beza Mahafaly where she studied wild mouse lemur behavior and morphology. She then earned her PhD from Duke University studying the behavioral ecology and conservation of primates. Her doctoral project focused on understanding the behavioral ecology of the endangered Udzungwa red colobus monkeys of Tanzania.
She enjoyed working with many primates in the Small Mammal House at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington, DC. Now, she spends her days with her true loves at the Sequoia Park Zoo where gibbons sing all day long and raccoons try to steal her treat pouch. Her days off are filled with even more animals as a wildlife rehabilitator where the dynamic is different with animals trying to bite her rather than "sweet-talk" her into handing over treats. ( P.S. If you think gibbons don't sweet talk with their "oo oo oo" vocalizations, then you need to work with some gibbons. Seriously, you are missing out.)
Crazy talented lemur artist
“Lemurs are a pretty big deal! Lemurs have been around such a long time, it’s definitely something to commend them for. My hope is if I can tell people how cool lemurs are, then maybe people will want to help the lemurs and conservation efforts on Madagascar. I don’t want to imagine a world without lemurs!”
Lauren obtained her double B.A. of Geography and Anthropology (with a minor in Photography) from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, where she also completed her Archaeological Field School Practicum.
Lauren is a lemur enthusiast and loves visiting her friends at Lemur Walk!
